The Brannon Special

The Brannon Special was the final CycleKart to be built by Peter Stevenson, and one of the last and best of his designs, altogether. While most Cyclekarts are based on a specific car to follow, this is Pure Art, and was inspired by a few different ideas: Peter's love of American Speedway Racers of the mid-20th-Century, and the incredibly cute little Schuco wind-up toy Mercedes racer from the'1930's. One of Peter's (and our) favorite racing films from back then is the movie To Please A Lady, with Clark Gable and Barbra Stanwyck — A good movie, and great cars— Peter named this CycleKart after the lead character, Mike Brannon!
This is a great driving car. It was the last CycleKart we made, and really benefits from a lot of the lessons we learned over the years. It has a working handbrake, in addition to the usual foot brake pedal, so you can use your left hand to brake intot he corners, if you feel like being a bit nostalgic! Some of the photos show the car with disc wheel covers, but these are no longer on the car. Otherwise, it was stored away in driving form, ready to go!

As with all of our CycleKarts, it has the standard Honda GX200 engine and Comet vari-drive, Honda wheels, and our usual plywood monococque body with foam-and-glass shaping.

The Whitney Straight Maserati is a true Barn-Find! We started this car back twenty years ago, but a divorce and changing locatiions sidetracked this beautiful project! Now it's time for someone to finish the car! It has the usual plywood monococque body, for light, stiff construction. This was the last CycleKart Michael built, and it has better engineering details than the others: Welded front spring mounts, a very smooth forward rope-start, so you don't have to get out of the cockpit to start the engine (as all of ours were fitted, but this is really smooth, using Harken blocks!), and a very slick dash-mounted choke system. The standard Honda GX200 and Comet drive are there, and Honda wheels.

This is a Wonderful Opportunity to get a great CycleKart project which is nearly finished, and has genuine historic value! The Whitney Straight Maserati is a very solid car, and possibly the smoothest-driving of all of our CycleKarts! It also is a bit larger than the original Delage and Type 59 Bugatti, and very much right in the groove for the modern CycleKart scale. It could easily handle a slightly hopped-up GX200, where the lighter, earlier cars could not. I have fond memories of tearing around in this car back in Monterey, and it ran GREAT (like I noted: Probably the best driving C-K we made). It just needs finishing touches and some TLC!

The front axle on this car will need to be replaced, as the original was given to a friend after his car was sadly bent in an accident (and Peter figured I wouldn't mind if he gave my axle to someone!), but these are easily found and one of the least challenging components to replace — Minor stuff.
